The Distribution Quadrilemma
Launching new blockchains is hard, man. You have to have a compelling concept. You have to assemble a multidisciplinary team. You have to actually build the goddamn thing. Somewhere during this process you also probably want to distribute your protocol’s native coin.
This last part is deceptively hard! In fact, I would contend that coin distribution is probably the hardest part of launching a new protocol and, concurrently, the process most likely to impact the long-term success, or failure, of the project.
An optimal distribution model should satisfy the following four properties (in no particular order). In the spirit of the blockchain industry’s affinity for quixotic lexicon, I have, quite sensibly, decided to term the difficulty of simultaneously satisfying these properties, ‘The Distribution Quadrilemma’ (DQ).
